As environmental awareness continues to rise design codes are put in place to reduce the impact of wastewater. This has a direct effect on how developers are able handle sewage waste in 1.0 – 3.0 acre lot communities. A STEP (Septic Tank Effluent Pumping) system can be used to collect wastewater into a centrally located treatment system. Each home in the community has its own septic tank; filtered effluent is then pumped through a small diameter collection line to an advanced treatment system.
This system has several advantages as compared to standard gravity sewer systems. A gravity system can carry a large upfront installation cost to get a project started. Whereas in a STEP system the largest part of the cost can be installed as each house is built. Another area of savings is directional drilling the collection line vs. excavating and installing large gravity piping. Silvester has been involved in the installation of STEP systems in several rural developments.
